Safe and happy

Just thought I should pop in since I cant log on to www.sara.is just to say that I am safe and happy and relatively well fed. Which is good.

Today I am in Delhi but we are leaving for Amritsar tomorrow to stay at the Golden Temple for a night or two and then we cross over to Pakistan.

I will probably go to school around march, which is great news, all this travelling is so intense and it will be nice to have some sort of a home for a month or so.
Life is nice right now, hard at times but I dont mind.

The day after tomorrow.

Everything is coming together now, which is great because I leave the day after tomorrow.  Ill stay in England for a few days before flying off to Delhi, India, that should be exciting.

I have been packing and so far it is going pretty well.  The bulk of my luggage is medicine that the doctors convincingly said I just had to bring with me, so I will be a good girl and do that.  Malaria-pills, penisillin, cholera in a bottle, pain killers...

Happy because people say they will miss me.  Sad because people say they will miss me.  Going away doesnt really grow on you, it always stays bad.

Saying the wrong thing

I made a rather unappropriate joke the other day...
You see, I thought it was rather funny.

I got to go to Norway last month with a certain Youth Foundation in Iceland and with us in the trip was a very lovely Danish man, chaperoning us young girls, really.
The hotel had two person bedrooms and there were three of us and him so he slept alone and I slept on a fold out chair in the girl´s bedroom.

Now, here is the funny thing. In a very unofficial meeting after the trip we were telling some members of this particular Youth Foundation about our trip, about the hotel we were staying at to be excact, and that they had two person bedrooms.
I, being very funny, said that since the bedrooms only had two beds the two girls had slept together in one and I had slept with our chaperone in the other bedroom.

Oops!

Apparently, even though we explained it wasnt so right away, lauged about it and said it was a joke it went down rather unwell with two of the ladies attending the meeting.

So they called the chaperone. A very nice, nice man. And asked him if he had slept with me.

Oops!

To which he replied: NO! I did not sleep with Sara.

So they called me just now, and having recently had my tonsils removed and a neck swollen to the size of Nebraska I had a hard time explaining that they NEEDED TO SEE A DOCTOR CAUSE THERE IS SOMETHING WRONG WITH THEIR HUMOUR!

Christmas

As much as I love the season, garish decorations and never ending christmas songs invading my silences make me want to leave the country and not come back until all thirteen yule lads have gone back to the mountains.

Christmas in Indonesia was particularily wonderful. I woke up at 5.30 as usual, breakfast was rice and fried eggs. I went to school at seven, dressed in my polyester school uniform, temperature around 35°C, 90% humidity, sunny.

The plan was to bake a cake for the family, tell them about christmas and play some icelandic christmas songs for them but after I got home and started cleaning my room (including my toilet which had not been cleaned since early august, and was looking rather alive) I got a text from a rather shy but very nice indie kind of music loving boy. So we decided to go to the movies together.

So Christmas dinner was Californian Friend Chicken, just like the one from Kentucky minus all the special ingredients, King Kong in the movies and then sitting in a cafe drinking coffee and eating hamburgers until my curfew.

Which was lovely! I got two gifts, one from a friend in Thailand, the other one from an Icelandic girl in Indonesia, and the present mama sent me arrived sometime in February. No pressure and no expectations, just how I like it.

Graduating soon...

Since I am graduating soon we had "Dimmission" at school yesterday. Icelandic tradition which includes dressing up in very silly costumes, drinking a large amount of alcoholic beverages and giving out prizes for nice teachers.
The day went like this:

  • 5.30 am Wake up, start drinking, take shower, drink more
  • 7 am Rented a house to drink in from 6am, most people were there around that time. Since some people carpooling with me were late we were there an hour late
  • 8 am The group got dressed up like Elvis, wig, sunnies and everything and rehersed some naughty songs about school and various teachers. Drinking more.
  • 9 am Walked in a group of 36 Elvises to school. Along the way we lifted the windshield wipers of all the cars in the school parking lot. Traditional prank.
  • 9.10 am Rowdy singing and dealing out lollipops to nice teachers
  • 9.35 am Pizza with the teachers, singing, photos and more pizza
  • 10 am until 1 pm we had some free time. Went to the library to do some Elvis moves but retired to my home after that to play cards and drink some more.
  • 12.50 One of the guys decided to pull a stunt and almost severed his spine. Passed out for a few minutes. A quarter of an hour later he stood up and had more beer. Icelandic viking.
  • 3 pm Twelve pee-stops, two smirinoffs and a liter of vodkamix later we arrived to Reykjavik for belly dancing lessons. Obviously I was a professional.
  • 4. 30 Scavenger hunt (for those of you who dont know what that is: Its a game where you get a list of things the team needs to complete, quite interesting) :
  • My tasks:
                Kiss one portuguese guy
                Kiss a bus driver
Go horsebackriding on a polish person
  • Other accomplishments by very drunk players:
                2 guys shaved their heads
1 guy got arrested (not a part of the game)
2 other guys got charged for breaking and entering the parliaments car park and harrassing senators
2 guys and 1 girl passed out, guy and a girl missed dinner

So it was a pretty nice day and we ended it at a pub near Selfoss where we drank even more and danced the night away still dressed as Elvis. Went to sleep rather early around 3 am.

I like graduation :)

Norway

First time in Norway last weekend 9-11th of November.  Amazingly, Oslo is even more expensive than Iceland.

I went there to take a course on acting and theater production. Why? Just because I could.

Woke up at 04.00 am after having gone to sleep at 02.00 am the night before. Flight left at 07.35 and when we arrived to Oslo we had around 6 hours to spend in the shopping district before we had a three hour bus ride to Langesund.
We got there very late in the night after 16 hours of travelling and had shrimps and clams for dinner.

Saturday was pretty hectic; we had a theoretical course, trust games (which I rocked at, by the way), outdoors activities... things like that.
There was a pool party in the night, and yes, I did go down to the pool to watch a bunch of 14 year old Norwegians play volley with a bunch of 15 year old Swedes, but the hot tub was nice.

Sunday was even more hectic than Saturday since we had 3 hours to produce a play. I was in the choreography department so I was directing a couple of stage fights and a gangster dance, very cool.
Three hours into Sunday and we had costumes, make-up, characters, props, setting, stage, dancing and stage-fighting and we had made our own script.

Our audience was a lady with two kids, but we didnt let that get us down :)

Fun. Next stop: India (or Hollywood!)

Denmark... again!

I just got back home from Denmark, yet again. This is the second time this year and... Oh, I dont know, 4th or 5th time total.

But it was fun! So much fun!
It was a school trip with the choir, held two concerts along the way along some impromtu mini-concerts in trains, trainstations, airports and walking around in Copenhagen.

Highlights of the trip:

  • Singing at Hovedbanegarden train station. Someone put a hat on the floor and we raised around 20 dollars :P
  • Singing in Frederiksberg Gymnasium for all the students who now consider us the best High School choir in Iceland.
  • Seeing big brother and little niece, eating fantastic tortillas.
  • Strawberry Daquiri
  • Bonde do role in Vega. Check out www.myspace.com/bondedorole
  • Cheap alcohol in 7eleven: Wednesday, Thursday, Friday and Sunday
  • Getting a little bit crunk in the airport on the way home, such great times Kristin my darling :D
  • Meeting an old friend in the airport
  • Getting lost in the longest walking street in the world. How was I supposed to know that our hostel was in the other side of town?
  • Chinese food on the run, cathching trains on the run, running around, being on the run, suitcases on the run, everything on the run.
  • Istegade by night. Officially Copenhagens worst street. Was very cool to see but I couldnt take pictures though...

I didnt sleep for 5 days, but despite that it was great! :D
Thank you everyone who made this trip so darn fantastic!
